Safe Car Wash App

On 4 June The Clewer Initiative with the support of the Santa Marta Group and law enforcement launch the Safe Car Wash app.

The Safe Car Wash app is part of a wider effort to eradicate labour exploitation in hand car washes. It is estimated that there are at least 18,000 hand car washes in the UK and although many are legitimate businesses, some of them are not and exploit victims of modern slavery.

Users can open the app when they visit a hand car wash and will be taken through a series of questions related to the indicators of modern slavery. Based on the answers provided the user may be prompted to call the Modern Slavery Helpline.

The Safe Car Wash app can be downloaded for free on to Apple and Android devices.

The date collected from the app will be anonymised and shared with the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA).

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, president of the Santa Marta Group:

“I welcome this very helpful and timely initiative in an area of real exploitation. As we learn to see this example of forced labour and modern slavery in our midst, we will also become more aware of the presence of this evil scourge in other sectors in our neighbourhood.”
